The Visual Intelligence Days is an annual gathering where VI researchers, user partners and invited guests convene to share knowledge and updates on the latest VI research and innovations.

The event consisted of two full days of tutorials, presentations and discussions on AI and deep learning, giving researchers across our research institutions the chance to collaborate and socialize with each other.

VIGS pre-program event at UiO

Before kickstarting the main event program, the Visual Intelligence Graduate School organized a pre-program event for early career researchers at Union371 Blindern, University of Oslo. 25 young researchers attended the pre-program event.

The event sought to connect young aspiring researchers across VI to strengthen research collaborations, share scientific experiences and get to know each other.

VIGS alumn Daniel Johansen Trosten held an invited talk at the pre-program, touching on the topic of representation learning, his experiences as a PhD student at VI and working at NORCE. Trosten also shared some useful research tips to the participants.

The pre-program event ended with a social program, consisting of a stacked tournament with darts, shuffleboard and a quiz.

This year's VIGS board consisted of Suaiba Amina Salahuddin (UiT), Magnus Størdal (UiT), Lars Uebbing (UiT), Solveig Thrun (UiT), Ingrid Utseth (NR), Vilde Schulerud Bøe (UiO) and Marius Aasan (UiT).

Inspiring talks and discussions

The main VI Days event featured a tutorial on diffusion models by professor Adín Ramírez Rivera (UiO), a user partner spotlight session on new VI work, results and infrastructure initiatives, an invited inspirational talk by Adrian Tofting and Odd Eirik Igland (VAKE), and a prospective outlook on trends within deep learning.

Further, the program included a collaborative work sessions centred around individual user partners. The session consisted of presentations and discussions to review the status of ongoing and planned research activities at the centre.

Several innovative solutions were presented by the VI user partner during the main VI Days event. Examples of presented methodologies included AI for mammography images, foundation models for oil spill detection, automatic classification of microfossils, uncertainty modelling in acoustic target detection, and detection of liver metastasis from CT images.

Professor Julia Schnabel of the Visual Intelligence Innovation Advisory Board gave attendees an overview of various applicational AI areas which her research group at Helmholtz Munich are involved in.

Such areas included advanced biomedical imaging, early disease detection and improved therapy, and disease interrelation and co-morbidity via Imaging.
