Meet Christian, our newest doctoral research fellow

We happily welcome Christian Salomonsen, who recently started as a doctoral research fellow at Visual Intelligence in Tromsø.

Salomonsen is from Tromsø, Norway and completed his master's degree in applied physics and mathematics at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. His thesis focused on satellite and aerial optic images for extracting buidling footprints using deep learning.

While studying at UiT, he has worked at Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) and as a teaching assistant at the university.

Salomonsen's PhD project will focus on continuing the research done by Visual Intelligence researchers in regards to dynamic PET images.

For instance, it aims to develop and build on existing methodologies such as the in-house developed deep learning-derived input function (DLIF) used in kinetic modeling. DLIF shows significant potential as a novel and innovative alternative to traditional arterial blood sampling.

- A deep learning based approach reduces the need for invasive blood sampling, which could simplify the procedure greatly, Salomonsen explains.

Salomonsen's project will be supervised by associate professors and VI researchers Elisabeth Wetzer, Kristoffer Wickstrøm, and Samuel Kuttner.

- I am very much looking forward to work with a topic that can have a positive impact on the medical field and improve treatment for patients. While working with medical imagery is fairly new to me, I find it and its associated challenges deeply fascinating, says Salomonsen.
